1. Principles of cutting, coloring, and styling of hair can be applicable to all hair types
One of my mentors- Camille Reed- told me for years that going to cosmetology school would make me a better stylist even if you will focus on textured hair. I did not understand what she meant until I started cosmetology school. Even though I had 75% of the knowledge from experience and going to a natural hair certificate program- cosmetology was that missing 25%. Cosmetology school has showed me how to hold my shears properly, how to formulate color formulas based on math and science, and how to achieve balance in design. These are essential for all stylists- even ones who specialize in textured hair and locs.
2. If you can master the formulation of color, you can create any color combination you want
Color is one of the most requested salon services in any salon. If you can master color formulation, you can create any combination that you want! Whether a guest wants simple and conservative or bold and vivid, I want to be able to serve that guest. With understanding more on color theory, the color wheel, and what different types of color do (e.g., semi permanent, permanent, etc.)- school has definitely taught me how to formulate like a champ.
3. Anatomy and physiology of the body has so many implications for a salon professional
There is A LOT of science involved in cosmetology school. This is the building blocks behind the science of cosmetology- the study of hair, skin, and nails. You must have a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology and science in general to understand many things including how hair grows, how the nerves in the body are affected by massage, how to touch the body in skin care services, product composition, and much more. I have a greater appreciation for how amazing the human body is.
4. Understanding the science behind how hair care products work
I thought that I knew a lot about product selection and different functions of different types of shampoos and conditioners. But I have learned more about products and why certain products work on certain hair and scalp conditions. Now that I understand the function of different shampoos and conditioners at a deeper level- I can choose even better products to serve my guests. So there will definitely will be some new products making its way into the Salon!
5. There is textured hair being taught in cosmetology school
As a stylist specializing in textured hair styles, I was surprised about the amount of resources on the Aveda website on natural hair! I was excited to see video tutorials on twisting textured hair, doing coil sets, color techniques for textured hair, curl defining services, and even locs?! I definitely plan on spending some time looking at haircuts for textured/curly hair to continue to strengthen my skills in that area for my loose natural guests. In terms of in person instruction, we mainly have focused on executing the silk press and braiding techniques.
